What is the difference between esthetics and cosmetology school?

The study of Esthetics is the study of skin and skin treatments. It is a 600-hour comprehensive curriculum with a 150 hour curriculum dedicated to advance skill sets and business skills. The Advanced Esthetic Program encompass 750 hours of comprehensive education.

Cosmetology is a 1500 hour program and the majority of the program is geared towards the study of hair and hair services. Cosmetology programs also embodies the study of skin and nails on a basic level.

What is esthetics?

Esthetics is the art of cleansing and beautifying the skin. Licensed estheticians are trained to address skin concerns, skin types, and provide the proper services to achieve the beautification goals of a client.

How do I get my esthetician license in Ohio?

First, you must go to a licensed esthetics school in Ohio and complete a clock hour esthetics program approved by the Ohio State Cosmetology and barber board. After graduating, you will take a state board exam composed of a theory and practical portion. Passing with a 75 or higher will earn an esthetics license.

How long does it take to become an esthetician in Ohio?

Students must complete either a 600 hour or 750-hour program. At LaBarberia, we offer the advanced esthetics program for 750 clock hours. Our full-time Advanced Esthetics Program takes about 6 months to complete with excellent attendance.

Do barbers cut female hair?

Yes, barbers cut all hair types and textures including men, women, and children.

How is barbering different from hairdressing?

Barbers spend 1800 hours mastering the details of precision haircutting and color and are licensed to use a straight razor. On the contrary, cosmetologists split their schooling between learning hair color, cutting, nail design, and skincare.

How long does it take to become a barber in Ohio?

Students complete 1800 clock hours in school before qualifying to take the barber licensing exam from the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board.

How do I renew my barber license in Ohio?

Licensed barbers must complete the required Continuing Education hours and the barber license renewal application on the elicense.ohio.gov website.

Do you need a barber license to open a barbershop in Ohio?

You do not need a barber license to open a barbershop in Ohio, however, you must employ a licensed barber as your shop manager in order to open a barbershop.

Face shaves and beard trims are available in the student barber clinic.

Do you take walk-in appointments?

Walk-in appointments are welcome in both the barber and esthetics clinics. However, it is recommended that guests book esthetics services ahead of time to ensure availability.

What type of facial is best for my skin type?

Every client’s skin is unique. As such, all skincare services begin with a thorough skin analysis to discover which facial may be best for each client.

How often should I get my hair cut?

It is recommended that clients get their haircut at least once every two weeks to maintain their desired look.

What courses do you offer?

We offer a 750-hour Advanced Esthetics course and several barbering courses: an 1800 hour Barber Program, a 1000 Barber Program (for licensed cosmetologists seeking a barber license), and a 200-hour Barber Refresher course.

Do you accept applicants outside of Ohio?

Yes, applicants from any part of the world can apply for our programs.

Do you offer financial aid?

Financial aid is available to those who qualify. We also accept the GI Bill.
