October 2017 Student Spotlight – Renee Skuly
October 23, 2017
Name: Renee Skuly Age: 28
LaBarberia Institute of Hair, the Cleveland Barber College has been recognizing our students with a monthly spotlight, for their talents, ambition, and hard work. For the month of October we would like to acknowledge Renee Skuly. Renee is from Euclid Ohio, a Cleveland State University graduate, where she received her bachelors degree in Psychology. Since 2012 she has been working at a counseling center for children.
In 2010 she installed dreadlocks into her own hair. She didn’t really have a clue what she was doing at the time, but over time, with much dedication and practice, she developed a talent and started doing other people’s dreadlocks. One of her clients happened to be a barber and was very interested to have Renee work at her shop. She finally made the leap this past April to attend Labarberia and jump start her career as an official barber.
Renee’s biggest challenge as a barber student has been face shaving, mostly because she was afraid of cutting people. But after months of practice and with great instructors guiding her, it has come to be one of her most enjoyed pieces of the barbering puzzle! Having come into school with minimal hair cutting experience, to becoming a spotlight student at LaBarberia, Renee feels that she has come a long way in a short period of time. She feels the most rewarding part of being a barber is when she turns a client toward the mirror and to see their smiles of satisfaction with the haircut that she just gave them.
Renee’s plan after graduating from LaBarberia is to work in downtown Willoughby at ‘Roots Salon and Barbershack‘, which is owned by the dread client who inspired her to come to barber school in the first place! On her spare time, Renee enjoys camping, hiking, traveling, spinning her fire hula hoop, slack lining and eating chocolate!
